The Maldivian Government is ramping up preparations for this year’s Eid-ul-Adha celebrations, following increased public demand and multiple requests from island and city councils for decorative lights and festive arrangements.
Minister of Cities, Administration and Public Works, Adam Shareef Umar, stated that many councils have reached out to the ministry seeking support to light up their islands for Eid. According to the Minister, there has been widespread enthusiasm from the public to mark the religious festival in a colourful and engaging manner.
The initiative is part of a national-level programme launched in 2024 under President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s Administration, aimed at celebrating Islamic festivals more vibrantly. Last “Eid Ali” event gained significant popularity, encouraging people of all ages to take part in the celebrations across the country.
This year, the Government plans to host official Eid-ul-Adha events in Kulhudhuffushi City, Guraidhoo in Kaafu Atoll, and Hithadhoo in Laamu Atoll. Major roads and gathering areas across various cities and islands are being decorated with lights and displays showcasing Islamic motifs and Eid messages.
Minister Adam Shareef noted that the decorative lights used for Eid are brought in annually. He also confirmed that the growing demand from councils will be considered in the ministry’s planning and budgeting for the next financial year, to ensure wider participation in future celebrations.
Eid-ul-Adha will be celebrated on Friday, 6 June 2025. Preparations are currently underway in Malé and throughout the atolls as the Government works to foster a unified and joyful atmosphere for the occasion.
