President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has been awarded a prestigious Special Award by the Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO) in recognition of his leadership in advancing tobacco control policies.

The award was announced on World No Tobacco Day, a global observance dedicated to raising awareness about the dangers of tobacco use.

The honour was shared with the Ministry of Health of Mauritius, with the WHO noting that the most distinguished recognition this year went to President Dr Muizzu and Mauritius for their impactful efforts. In total, 36 individuals and entities were acknowledged worldwide.

President Dr Muizzu's Administration has introduced some of the region’s most progressive tobacco legislation, including a generational ban that prohibits the use, sale, and distribution of tobacco products to individuals born on or after January 1, 2007. The policy also reinforces existing restrictions by raising the minimum legal age for tobacco purchases to 21.

In a further move to protect public health, especially among young people, President Dr Muizzu has also enforced a national ban on the sale and import of vaping products.
