Geela Ali, the newly appointed Ambassador of the Maldives to the European Union (EU), has formally presented her Letters of Credence to the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, marking the formal commencement of her diplomatic role.
The ceremony was held on Tuesday at the European Commission’s headquarters, the Berlaymont building, in Brussels.
Following the presentation, Ambassador Geela engaged in a brief exchange with President von der Leyen, during which she conveyed warm greetings and best wishes from President Dr Mohamed Muizzu.
She also expressed the Maldivian Government’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with the European Union and enhancing bilateral relations in key areas of mutual interest.
President von der Leyen congratulated Ambassador Geela on her appointment and reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to maintaining the positive momentum in its relationship with the Maldives.
Diplomatic relations between the Maldives and EU were established in 1983. The Maldives Mission to the EU was subsequently established on April 1, 2008, a significant step in formalising the partnership.
Over the years, the EU has remained a key development partner, supporting the Maldives in its democratic consolidation and providing vital economic and development assistance.
