President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has noted that ongoing legal proceedings and procedural challenges have delayed efforts to incorporate Noonu Tholhendhoo under the administrative jurisdiction of Maalhendhoo in Noonu Atoll.
The matter was raised during the President’s four-day visit to 13 islands in Noonu Atoll, where he engaged with local communities to review progress on Government-led development projects and to discuss new initiatives.
Addressing residents in Noonu Maalhendhoo, the President reiterated that the Administration remains committed to fulfilling pledges made during the presidential campaign, including those involving land management and jurisdictional changes.
According to the President, legal obstacles, specifically a pending case filed by the Atoll Council have prevented a final resolution on the administrative status of Tholhendhoo. The issue is currently under judicial consideration, and ongoing procedural matters have affected the timeline for implementation.
The President acknowledged community concerns about land scarcity and the need for space to support housing and economic activities. He highlighted the importance of undertaking development in a way that ensures the protection of Maalhendhoo’s natural resources, calling for coordinated efforts among relevant institutions.
On the broader development agenda, the President affirmed that plans are in place to begin key infrastructure projects in Maalhendhoo by the end of August. These include the construction of a new jetty and coastal protection works for the eroding areas. He confirmed that preparatory stages such as environmental assessments and design finalisation are complete, and that the necessary materials are being delivered.
