The Government has officially commenced the construction of a Fitness and Recreation Centre and Outdoor Gym in Noonu Lhohi with the groundbreaking ceremony held on 24 July 2025.

The ceremony was officiated by Minister of Sports, Fitness and Recreation Abdulla Rafiu and took place during President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s ongoing tour of islands in the atoll. The project is part of a broader presidential pledge to establish modern, inclusive sports and wellness facilities across the country.

The new centre in Lhohi, with a  two-year rollout plan, is expected to feature dedicated fitness zones and outdoor gym equipment, with specific provisions to support women’s exercise programmes and group fitness classes. Officials confirmed the centre is designed to promote active lifestyles and improve access to recreational services at the community level.

The Ministry recently awarded 77 sports infrastructure projects to State-owned companies, underscoring the Government’s commitment to decentralised development and youth engagement through sport.

During his current tour of the atoll, President Dr Muizzu has launched a series of development initiatives across multiple islands, including the commencement of new infrastructure projects such as land reclamation works, hospital upgrades, and fitness centres.
