The Department of National Registration (DNR) has launched ID card printing and issuance services in Thaa Atoll Vilufushi.

Vilufushi is now the second island in Thaa Atoll to provide this service locally, following Veymandoo. The introduction of on-site printing eliminates the need for residents to wait for weekly dispatches from Malé.

The DNR stated that ID card services are currently available in 27 islands across the country. The aim is to establish printing and issuance services in all atolls before the end of the year as part of the Government’s ongoing effort to decentralise essential services.

In addition to expanding access within the country, the Government is also working to extend ID card printing to international locations with large Maldivian populations. The service was introduced in Malaysia in April 2025, marking the first time it has been offered outside the Maldives. Further expansions are planned for Sri Lanka, India and the United Kingdom.
