Zakat Fund disburses MVR 30.7M in first six months of 2025

The Maldives Zakat House has disbursed MVR 30.7 million from the Zakat Fund in the first six months of 2025, providing targeted financial assistance across various categories including healthcare, poverty alleviation, education, and religious activities.
The majority of the expenditure, MVR 14.2 million, was allocated as essential assistance to those in need, with each recipient receiving MVR 5,000. An additional MVR 78,378 was provided as indirect assistance to those facing exceptional personal or financial circumstances.
Medical assistance accounted for one of the largest portions of funding, with MVR 8.5 million used to support treatment for 594 individuals. Cancer care received the highest allocation at MVR 2.4 million, followed by transplant cases; MVR 1.3 million, and support for patients suffering from co-morbidities, heart, kidney, and lung conditions. A total of MVR 4.1 million was spent on treatment for various other medical needs.
Support for distressed travellers, amounted to MVR 428,107. These funds were used to assist individuals travelling within the Maldives and abroad, helping them recover from travel-related difficulties. Under support for religious and educational initiatives, more than MVR 5.6 million was spent. This included MVR 3.2 million for the promotion of Qur’anic education, MVR 1.7 million for religious programmes, and MVR 578,460 for Islamic text translation. A further MVR 60,489 was allocated to support higher education, while MVR 1,000 was directed towards training activities.
Administrative expenses for the period totalled MVR 1.8 million, covering staff salaries, with MVR 4,776 spent in connection with the 2024 International Zakat Symposium.
