Passengers travelling through Velana International Airport (VIA) are advised to plan their journeys carefully, as the new passenger terminal is set to open on 26 July 2025.

The national airline, Maldivian, has issued an alert anticipating increased footfall and vehicular congestion in and around the airport following the inauguration, which coincides with the Maldives’ 60th Independence Day. The development is expected to temporarily intensify traffic both within the airport and on access roads.

To avoid delays, international travellers are advised to arrive at least three hours before departure, and domestic passengers at least two hours. Passengers are also urged to complete check-in and security formalities early and factor in potential traffic when planning their arrival.

Maldivian will be the first carrier to operate flights from the new terminal. Authorities have confirmed that all necessary arrangements are in place to ensure a smooth transition. The terminal’s opening marks a major milestone in VIA’s infrastructure development, aimed at expanding capacity and improving service quality.
