Independence Day celebrations were held in Malé City on Saturday evening, featuring a vibrant lineup of events at Republic Square to commemorate 60 years since the Maldives gained independence.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu graced the event alongside First Lady Sajidha Mohamed and senior Government officials. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was on a state visit to the Maldives, was also present for the celebrations.
The evening began with a military salute to President Dr Muizzu, followed by the national anthem, and a military display and procession. The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) and the National Cadet Corps led a street march through Malé, beginning at 04:00 p.m. The procession paused at four locations across the city, where military bands performed ceremonial tunes.
Adding to the cultural element of the evening, students from four schools across the Greater Malé Region presented traditional performances, showcasing Maldivian heritage through dance and music.
While the celebrations at Republic Square were a key part of the Independence Day events, the highlight of this year’s 60th anniversary is the inauguration of the new passenger terminal at Velana International Airport, scheduled for later in the evening.
