President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed the Maldives’ commitment to safeguarding women and girls from all forms of violence, in a message shared to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.

In a post on X, President Dr Muizzu stressed that every woman and girl deserves security, dignity, and freedom from violence. He noted that as technology becomes more deeply integrated into daily life, the risks of online harassment and exploitation have also grown.

The President called for collective action to ensure digital platforms empower women and girls and provide safe spaces for their development.

Following the President’s statement, First Lady Sajidha Mohamed also issued a message underscoring the urgent need to confront violence in all its forms, particularly in the digital sphere. She reaffirmed that there is no excuse for online intimidation or harassment and urged society to work together to create safer online and offline environments for women and girls.

The International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, observed annually on 25 November, serves as a global call to end violence targeting women and girls. The day also marks the beginning of the UN’s 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, a worldwide campaign dedicated to raising awareness, strengthening legal protections, and promoting support systems for survivors.

In the Maldives, the day is widely used to highlight ongoing challenges faced by women and girls and to advocate for stronger legal, institutional, and community-level measures to prevent gender-based violence.
