President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has shared the latest developments in the Government’s accelerated land reclamation programme, announcing continued progress in Hulhumalé Phase III and outlining upcoming works in Giraavaru Falhu and other islands.
Via his official X account on Tuesday, the President said the dredger TSHD Prins Der Nederlanden has arrived in the Maldives and will begin operations in Hulhumalé Phase III on Wednesday. It will work alongside TSHD Oranji, which is already active in the area. He added that bund wall construction in Giraavaru Falhu will start once the Environmental Impact Assessment and other formalities are completed.
The President noted that reclamation in Hulhumalé Phase III remains on schedule for completion by the end of next month. Once finished, both dredgers will be deployed to Giraavaru Falhu, where reclamation is expected to conclude within two to three months.
These updates follow the President’s earlier statements during his October visit to Shaviyani Komandoo, where he highlighted that nationwide reclamation works are expected to be completed within eight months.
In Hulhumalé, the ongoing project, contracted to Capital Marine and Civil Construction Company Private Limited (CMC), aims to reclaim a total of 63 hectares using a 22,000-cubic-metre dredger from Boskalis. To date, 24 hectares have been reclaimed.
The Government has implemented a range of measures to expedite reclamation projects across the country. President Dr Muizzu continues to emphasise that these large-scale efforts are crucial to addressing housing demands in the Malé region and advancing national development priorities.
