Seaplane services have begun operating from Terminal 1 at Velana International Airport (VIA), with the launch of dedicated seaplane check-in counters and the introduction of designated bus routes to transport passengers to the seaplane terminal.

Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) said the south parking zone at Arrival Gate 4 of the new terminal has been allocated exclusively for seaplane operators and MACL staff buses. As a result, the company has requested other vehicles not to use the area. MACL noted that unauthorised entry, exit or parking that obstructs operations in the zone is prohibited.

The new terminal features 24 check-in counters dedicated to seaplane passengers. The company said the upgraded facilities will support the Maldives’ position as home to the world’s largest seaplane operation and improve service efficiency for travellers.

Terminal 1 at Velana International Airport officially opened on 26 July last year. 41 airlines have since completed their transition to the new terminal.

The previous terminal, constructed in 1978, faced long-standing capacity limitations. In contrast, the new terminal has the capacity to handle up to 7.5 million passengers annually, significantly enhancing airport operations and the overall passenger experience.
