President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has stated that 21,174 jobs have been created in the economy since 17 November 2023 as a result of the Government’s efforts to enhance and diversify economic activity.
Delivering the Presidential Address 2026, the President said that job creation has spanned multiple sectors, including 6,726 positions in the private sector.
The President also announced that, effective from 5 February 2027, only Maldivians will be permitted to work as cashiers across the Maldives. He said the policy is expected to create at least 25,000 additional job opportunities within the next year.
To ensure the successful implementation of the measure, the President said the Government will provide comprehensive support over the coming 12 months. This includes skills development, public awareness programmes on job security and work ethic, and engagement with business owners to prepare them for the transition.
The President further highlighted ongoing efforts to address the issue of undocumented expatriates, describing it as a key factor in expanding employment opportunities for Maldivians. He said the Government has launched a three-year nationwide initiative, Operation Kurangi, to resolve the issue.
Under the operation, biometric data of 205,701 foreign nationals have so far been collected and updated, including ten fingerprints and facial recognition photographs. The President said that 228 undocumented foreigners have been deported to date.
