President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has declared 2027 as “Visit Maldives Year”, unveiling ambitious plans to attract 2.5 million tourists this year, a projected 11.3 per cent increase compared to 2025.
Delivering his Presidential Address 2026, the President emphasised that tourism remains the Government’s top priority for driving economic growth. He noted that 2025 closed with a record 2.2 million tourist arrivals, marking a 9.8 per cent rise from 2024 and the fastest year in Maldivian history to reach one million visitors.
According to the Maldives Monetary Authority, the tourism industry generated USD 5.55 billion in revenue last year, reflecting a 13.8 per cent increase compared to the previous year.
President Dr Muizzu said that Visit Maldives Year 2027 will be celebrated as a national event, jointly organized with partners in the domestic and international tourism industry. He stressed that the initiative will showcase the Maldives globally while ensuring the sector continues to deliver record-breaking results.
The President reiterated that the Government’s vision is to strengthen tourism as the backbone of the economy, while creating opportunities for Maldivians to benefit from the sector’s growth.
