President outlines key cooperation areas after talks in Sri Lanka

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has outlined key areas of cooperation between the Maldives and Sri Lanka, following official talks held during his ongoing state visit.

Speaking after the meeting in Colombo, the President said discussions focused on strengthening bilateral relations across economic, social and regional areas. He noted that several agreements were concluded, with attention now shifting towards implementation and delivery.

Economic cooperation featured prominently in the discussions, with emphasis placed on expanding trade, encouraging investment and creating a more conducive business environment. The President also acknowledged the longstanding people-to-people links between the two countries, including the contribution of Sri Lankan nationals to the Maldives and the presence of Maldivians in Sri Lanka.

He further highlighted plans to deepen collaboration in areas such as education, skills development and youth empowerment, alongside cooperation in fisheries, marine protection and maritime security. The upcoming Maldives–Sri Lanka Business Forum was also identified as a platform to strengthen private sector engagement.

The President additionally pointed to shared challenges, including the impacts of climate change, noting the importance of continued cooperation and joint advocacy on global platforms. He added that the visit reflects efforts to further develop bilateral ties and enhance regional cooperation.
