President Dr Mohamed Muizzu today participated in a tree planting ceremony in Colombo to commemorate the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Maldives and Sri Lanka.
The ceremony was held at Viharamahadevi Park, where President Dr Muizzu was received by Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayaka. The two leaders jointly planted Horsfieldia iryaghedhi, a critically endangered tree species endemic to Sri Lanka.
The tree planting symbolised the close bilateral ties and enduring friendship between the two countries, while also reflecting their shared commitment to environmental sustainability and the well-being of future generations.
The event formed part of President Dr Muizzu’s ongoing state Visit to Sri Lanka, which includes a series of high-level engagements aimed at strengthening cooperation and enhancing bilateral relations.
The Maldives and Sri Lanka established diplomatic relations on 26 July 1965 and have since maintained strong ties based on mutual respect and longstanding people-to-people connections.
