The Maldives Police Service has introduced a payment system for fines related to the use, sale, and possession of vapes and e-cigarettes, following recent amendments to the Tobacco Control Act.
In a press release, the Police reaffirmed their commitment to enforcing the new regulations and warned that legal action will be taken against individuals found selling, distributing, or sharing electronic cigarettes and vaping devices. Offenders will receive notifications via a text message, which will include a secure Vaaru Pay link for online payment of fines.
The Police urged the public to comply with the amended Tobacco Control Act and cooperate with its implementation. Additionally, the Police emphasised that collective efforts are essential to creating a healthier, tobacco-free society.
Following the ban on vape products and e-cigarettes effective from December 15, 2024, strict penalties have been introduced for violations. Importing vaping devices incurs a fine of MVR 50,000, with an additional MVR 10,000 for each device or product. Selling vaping devices carries a penalty of MVR 20,000, plus an extra MVR 10,000 for each unit sold.
The possession and use of vape products carry a penalty of MVR 5,000. Moreover, selling or distributing vape products to minors incurs a severe penalty of MVR 50,000.
