Japan provides USD 7.6 million worth of equipment to MNDF Coast Guard

The Government of Japan has provided equipment worth USD 7.6 million to the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) Coast Guard, aimed at strengthening its maritime search and rescue capabilities.
At a ceremony held on December 16, 2024, the equipment was officially handed over by Japan's Ambassador to the Maldives, Takeuchi Midori. The Minister of Defence, Mohamed Ghassan Maumoon, accepted the donation on behalf of MNDF.
In her speech, Ambassador Takeuchi Midori reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to supporting the Maldives in bolstering its maritime operations. She underscored the significance of international collaboration in promoting safer seas and enhancing regional security.
Defence Minister Ghassan extended his appreciation to the Government of Japan for its generous assistance. He noted that the advanced equipment would greatly improve the MNDF Coast Guard’s ability to respond swiftly and effectively to maritime emergencies.
This contribution is expected to play a key role in enhancing search and rescue efforts, safeguarding lives at sea, and ensuring the safety of vessels operating within Maldivian waters.
Japan and the Maldives share a long-standing relationship built on mutual respect and collaboration. Japan has been a steadfast supporter of the Maldives across multiple sectors, including disaster management, environmental conservation, education and human resource development.
