The parliamentary sitting scheduled for Sunday afternoon to elect a new Deputy Speaker of Parliament has been postponed until Monday following the resignation of Dhiggaru MP Ahmed Nazim.

Nazim stepped down from the post on Sunday morning shortly before Parliament was due to vote on a motion seeking his removal. His resignation was announced by Speaker of Parliament Abdul Raheem Abdulla at the start of the sitting.

Following the announcement, no further business was conducted and the sitting was adjourned. Speaker Abdul Raheem had initially informed members that another sitting would be held at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday.

However, the People's Majlis Secretariat later notified media organisations that the next parliamentary sitting would instead be held on Monday. The Secretariat confirmed to MMTV that the sitting scheduled for Sunday afternoon had been postponed.

The no-confidence motion against Nazim followed a decision by the ruling People's National Congress (PNC) Parliamentary Group on 13 May. A resolution seeking his removal was subsequently submitted to Parliament on 14 May with the signatures of 73 members.
