Vice President Uz Hussain Mohamed Latheef has called for a just climate transition that considers the diverse needs of nations, curbs global warming, and safeguards marine biodiversity.

Speaking at the Opening Ceremony of the Third China-Indian Ocean Region Forum on Blue Economy Development Cooperation in Kunming, China, on Monday, he stressed the importance of balancing global climate action with the unique challenges faced by vulnerable states.

He highlighted the Maldives’ deep connection to the ocean, noting that the livelihoods and identity of Maldivians, known as “children of the sea”, depend on marine ecosystems.

He expressed concern over the threats posed by climate change, marine pollution, and Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) fishing, which jeopardise key industries such as tourism and fisheries. These issues, he explained, endanger fish stocks, coastal livelihoods, and food security, underscoring the urgency of adopting sustainable practices.

Citing Maldivian fisheries’ ethical pole-and-line methods, which minimise by-catch and protect marine habitats, the Vice President showcased how traditional practices can support environmental conservation.

He emphasised that global efforts must acknowledge and address the disproportionate climate burden borne by Small Island Developing States (SIDS), which contribute minimally to emissions but suffer severe climate impacts.

The Maldives, he added, is actively responding to these challenges through adaptive measures and President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s ambitious plans to scale up climate action and promote sustainable development via the blue economy.

The Vice President also participated in the closing ceremony of forum where he launched the Global Development Project Pool (GDPP) Information Management System, a platform aimed at enhancing collaborative initiatives across the region.

He inaugurated the China-Indian Ocean Region Centre for Maritime Cooperation and Training plaque, which will serve as a hub for advancing maritime expertise and promoting sustainable ocean governance.

The event brought together notable dignitaries, including Reginald Farley, President of the Senate of Barbados; Luo Zhaohui, Chairman of CIDCA; Kouadio Affian, Chair of IOC-AFRICA; and Sun Shuxian, Vice Minister of the Ministry of Natural Resources of China.
