Government’s administrative framework restructured following Cabinet reconstitution

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has restructured the Government’s administrative framework following the reconstitution of the Cabinet to 15 ministerial portfolios, including the Attorney General. The changes were formalised through a directive issued by the President’s Office on Wednesday.

The restructuring includes the dissolution of several ministries, the renaming of existing ministries, and changes to oversight of key Government agencies. Additionally, a new Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy has been established.

Dissolved ministries:

• Ministry of Social and Family Development

• Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation

• Ministry of Higher Education, Labour and Skills Development

• Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Information and Arts

• Ministry of Cities, Local Government and Public Works

• Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Welfare

Renamed ministries:

• Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology to Ministry of Homeland Security, Labour and Technology

• Ministry of Finance and Planning to Ministry of Finance and Public Enterprises

• Ministry of Education to Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Skills Development

• Ministry of Health to Ministry of Health, Family and Welfare

• Ministry of Economic Development and Trade to Ministry of Economic Development, Transport and Trade

• Ministry of Islamic Affairs to Ministry of Islamic Affairs and Endowments

• Ministry of Tourism and Environment to Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation

• Ministry of Sports, Fitness and Recreation to Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Sports and Fitness

• Ministry of Dhivehi Language, Culture and Heritage to Ministry of Arts, Culture and Heritage

• Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure to Ministry of Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development

• Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources to Ministry of Fisheries, Agriculture and Ocean Resources

Key agency oversight changes:

• National Careers Service transferred to the Ministry of Homeland Security, Labour and Technology

• Maldives Qualifications Authority, Maldives National Skills Development Authority, and Maldives Polytechnic transferred to the Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Skills Development

• National Social Protection Agency and related social services transferred to the Ministry of Health, Family and Welfare

• Maldives Transportation Safety Board transferred to the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation

• National Library, National Archives, and National Centre for the Arts transferred to the Ministry of Arts, Culture and Heritage

• Environmental Protection Agency, Utility Regulatory Authority, Maldives Meteorological Service, and Baa Atoll Biosphere Reserve Office transferred to the Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy

The President also finalised the official Dhivehi names of the ministries under a separate directive issued on Wednesday.
