A fire that broke out at a private fibre workshop in Shaviyani Milandhoo on Monday night destroyed four dinghies and caused extensive damage to the facility.

According to the Maldives Police Service (MPS), the incident was reported at 11:09 p.m. The fire was brought under control with the assistance of police officers and members of the public after several hours of firefighting efforts.

Police said three dinghies, fibre-working equipment and other materials were damaged in the blaze. However, a member of the Milandhoo Council confirmed that four dinghies were destroyed. The council member said no serious injuries were reported in the incident.

In addition to the loss of the vessels, the fibre workshop sustained significant damage, while the workers’ main storage facility was also reportedly destroyed in the fire. According to the council, the four dinghies were under construction at the workshop, with one vessel scheduled for delivery on Tuesday.

The extent of the damage has not yet been officially assessed, although initial estimates indicate losses could exceed MVR 1 million. Cleanup efforts are currently underway, and authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the fire.
