The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has confirmed that the development of M. Muli Airport will be completed by February 2025.

The project, which began with the acquisition of land in Muli and the handover of a 1,200-metre runway for MVR 212 million on February 28, 2021, has faced delays due to various challenges.

Speaking on MMTV’s Bodu Khabaru programme, MTCC’s Managing Director, Ahmed Saudee, stated that work is now progressing at a faster pace. This includes ongoing dredging activities by MTCC's trailing suction hopper dredger, Mahaa Jarraafu, alongside terminal construction and lighting work.

Saudee added it is also President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s aim to complete the airport and make it operational by the end of February 2025 to provide services to the residents of Muli.

While runway and terminal works were largely completed by April 2023, a cash flow issue had previously caused delays according to Saudee.

MTCC is also overseeing the construction of a causeway linking Muli and Naalaafushi as part of the project’s wider scope. The development of Muli Airport is expected to enhance regional connectivity and improve accessibility for the local population.
