The First Amendment to the Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters Act, ratified by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu on December 17, introduces crucial updates to enhance international cooperation in tackling cybercrime and offences involving emerging technologies.
The Amendment improves procedures for discovering electronic evidence, accessing data in computing systems, and retrieving traffic data in real-time. It also outlines methods for inspecting content data with international assistance.
A key addition is the establishment of a 24/7 network to facilitate the exchange of information related to computer data crimes, ensuring quicker access to evidence and clearer protocols for mutual assistance.
These changes are vital as cybercrime increasingly transcends borders, requiring effective collaboration between nations. By modernising its framework, the Maldives strengthens its ability to combat digital threats and aligns with global standards.
As the new measures take effect, they pave the way for a more secure and coordinated response to digital crime.
