The Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has officially handed over the land allocated for the construction of the largest mosque in the Maldives to the Ministry of Islamic Affairs and Endowments.
The land transfer agreement was signed during a ceremony held on Wednesday. Minister of Islamic Affairs and Endowments Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed signed the agreement on behalf of the Ministry, while HDC Managing Director Brigadier General (Retired) Ali Zuhair signed on behalf of the corporation.
The mosque is planned to be developed in Hulhumalé, between Phase II and Phase III.
To support the implementation of the project, the Ministry has signed a memorandum of understanding with Saudi Arabia's Al Rajhi company to facilitate financing arrangements.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu previously announced that work on the landmark project is intended to coincide with the commemoration of 900 years since the Maldives embraced Islam. Efforts are currently underway to commence physical works on the mosque within September this year.
