Land reclamation has commenced for the upgrade of the Girifushi Training Centre, marking the start of a major project to strengthen the Maldives National Defence Force's (MNDF) training capacity and operational capabilities.
The project was officially launched by Minister of Defence and National Service Hassan Rasheed. Initiated under the direction of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, Commander-in-Chief of the MNDF, the project has been contracted to the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC).
Under the first phase of the project, 13.3 hectares of land will be reclaimed, expanding Girifushi from its current size of 5.7 hectares. The development will also include coastal protection measures such as boulder revetments, breakwaters and groynes to minimise erosion.
Harbour upgrades are also planned, including the construction of an L-block quay wall and two jetties measuring 40 metres and 12 metres respectively. In addition, the existing 100-metre small arms firing range will be replaced with a new 300-metre firing range to enhance training facilities.
According to the MNDF, further developments will be carried out after the first phase is completed to transform Girifushi into a modern military training centre. The facility is expected to serve as the main training hub for the government's National Service programme. Future plans include the development of an officer training wing, accommodation facilities for students and instructors, and other supporting infrastructure.
President Dr Muizzu first announced plans to expand Girifushi during his Victory Day address, citing space constraints and limited resources at the training centre. He said additional land was needed to strengthen military training programmes and support the implementation of the National Service programme aimed at equipping young Maldivians with essential skills.
The President had also highlighted the strategic importance of the project, stating that expanding Girifushi would enhance the operational readiness of the armed forces and contribute to strengthening national security.
