The Maldives National University (MNU) has partnered with the Occupational Therapy Association of Maldives (OTAM) to introduce a degree programme in occupational therapy, addressing the significant shortage of trained professionals in the field.

The agreement, signed on December 17, outlines the launch of a four-year degree programme aimed at equipping Maldivians with the skills needed to pursue careers in occupational therapy.

The programme, set to commence in the second semester of 2025, has been developed with input from international experts and is aligned with the standards of the World Federation of Occupational Therapy (WFOT).

Dr Aishath Shanoora, Dean of MNU’s Faculty of Health Sciences, highlighted the urgent need for qualified occupational therapists in the Maldives, noting that only three individuals currently practice in the country. The new initiative aims to significantly increase the number of qualified professionals in the field, ensuring that more Maldivian students enter the profession.

It will be the first programme carried out by the Health Science Faculty that is approved by international standards, Dr. Shanoora added. This accreditation, from the Maldives Qualification Authority (MQA), the Allied Health Council, and the WFOT, will ensure that the programme meets global standards, enhancing the employability of graduates and fostering stronger industry connections.

MNU’s Vice-Chancellor, Dr Aishath Shehenaz Adam, and OTAM Chairperson Aminath Thooha Adhlee both expressed enthusiasm for the programme, which is expected to play a vital role in improving healthcare services across the country.

Occupational therapists play an important role in improving people's lives by helping them become more independent through therapy, skill-building, and changes to their environment. They work in places like hospitals, rehab centres, nursing homes, and schools, helping people with daily tasks, advising on workplace ergonomics, and providing training and support to patients, families, and caregivers.

The collaboration between MNU and OTAM represents a significant step towards expanding the occupational therapy sector in the Maldives, with the programme providing students with the necessary practical experience and exposure to the professional environment.
