Four individuals have been fined MVR 20,000 each for breaching the amended Tobacco Control Act, which prohibits the use, sale, and distribution of vapes in the Maldives.
The Maldives Police Service confirmed in a media statement that the fines were issued by December 17. Under the law, which came into force on December 15, individuals found using vapes face a penalty of MVR 5,000.
The updated legislation also imposes significant fines on those involved in the sale or distribution of electronic cigarettes or vaping devices. Importers can be fined up to MVR 50,000, with an additional MVR 10,000 penalty for each item imported.
Similarly, selling or distributing vaping products incurs a fine of MVR 20,000, while each item sold or distributed attracts an additional MVR 10,000 fine. If a product is sold to a minor, the fine increases to MVR 50,000.
The police noted that violators are notified via mobile message, which includes a payment link through VaaruPay to facilitate fine payments.
In addition to the vape ban, the Government has raised excise duties on tobacco products.
