The Prosecutor General (PG), Uz Abbas Shareef, has ordered a criminal investigation into the Binveriya and Gedhoruveriya schemes following the revelation that regulations governing the acceptance of applications, as well as the allocation of plots and flats, were violated.

The schemes, which were introduced by the Government, have now become the subject of heightened scrutiny due to irregularities in their execution.

The PG’s office mandated that, under Article 223 (f) of the Constitution, to investigate the legitimacy of the allotment process, including identifying the beneficiaries of the land and flats, and ensuring that all procedures were followed correctly.

As such, the PG has mandated both the Maldives Police Service and the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) to look into any potential misconduct and bring forward criminal charges if necessary.

To ensure transparency and efficiency, the PG has also instructed that progress updates be shared weekly, with an emphasis on conducting a prompt investigation.

The PG also made a statement on his official X account saying that he issued the order taking citizens' concerns into account regarding the matter. He stated that these concerns could be resolved through a complete and swift investigation and by taking necessary measures against those who needed to be held accountable.
