The Maldives is forecasted to experience unsettled weather over the December school holiday period, with scattered showers, thunderstorms, and strong winds anticipated across multiple regions.

Rough seas and high waves have prompted cautionary advisories, particularly for marine activities and travel between islands.

In Hulhulé, heavy squally showers and thunderstorms are expected from December 19 at 10:00 am to December 20 at 10:00 am. Wind speeds are anticipated to range from 17 to 27 miles per hour, with gusts reaching up to 50 miles per hour during periods of rain. Seas in the area will be rough to very rough, with wave heights of 7 to 9 feet. The marine forecast for the same period echoes these conditions, highlighting the likelihood of hazardous swell waves during high tide.

Hanimadhoo is forecasted to experience similar weather conditions from December 19 at 1:00 pm to December 20 at 1:00 pm. Scattered and heavy showers accompanied by thunderstorms are expected, with winds ranging from 7 to 17 miles per hour, gusting up to 40 miles per hour. Seas will vary between moderate and rough, with wave heights of 3 to 6 feet. Swell waves remain a concern during high tide, warranting caution.

Further south, regions including Kadhdhoo, Kaadehdhoo, and Gan are also expected to face scattered showers and thunderstorms. Wind speeds in these areas will range from 13 to 23 miles per hour, with gusts up to 40 miles per hour during showers. Seas will remain rough, with wave heights between 4 and 7 feet. Similar advisories have been issued for these regions, stressing the potential for swell waves during high tide.

These conditions coincide with the December school holidays, a time of increased travel and recreational activity for both residents and visitors. Authorities urge the public to monitor updates closely and exercise caution, particularly for travel and water-based activities. Mariners are advised to avoid unnecessary journeys and remain alert to sudden changes in weather and sea conditions.

With strong winds, heavy rain, and turbulent seas expected to persist, adjustments to travel and outdoor plans may be necessary. Safety advisories emphasise preparedness and vigilance in order to minimise risks during this period.
