The Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy has announced plans to establish more than 50 megawatts of renewable energy generation across 24 islands under the ASPIRE and ARISE projects.
The initiative forms part of the Government's efforts to reduce the Maldives' dependence on fossil fuels by expanding the use of renewable energy nationwide. It is also expected to lower electricity generation costs while reducing carbon emissions.
The projects will support President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's target of generating 33 per cent of the country's electricity from renewable sources by 2028, marking another step towards achieving the national renewable energy goal.
Solar power systems will be installed on islands across both the northern and southern atolls under the projects. Once completed, the expansion is expected to reduce expenditure on imported fuel while delivering long-term economic and environmental benefits for the Maldives.
