Minister of Economic Development, Transport and Trade Mohamed Saeed has said the Government is working on a comprehensive strategy to address traffic congestion and parking challenges in Malé City through coordinated efforts involving multiple State institutions.
Speaking in Parliament, minister Saeed said the Government is working closely with the Maldives Police Service, the Ministry of Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development and other relevant agencies to develop long-term solutions to congestion. He added that the road redevelopment project in Malé, being carried out with assistance from the Chinese Government, is expected to play a significant role in easing traffic and parking issues in the capital.
Responding to a question from Baarah Member of Parliament Ibrahim Shujau, who raised concerns over the carrying capacity of the Greater Malé Region and requested updated vehicle registration figures, the Minister also shared the latest motorcycle registration statistics. He shared that 11,622 motorcycles were registered in 2024, followed by 11,338 in 2025, while 5,965 have been registered so far this year.
He added that the current Administration has tightened the vehicle registration system by ending the registration of vehicles that do not meet legal requirements and introducing measures to verify the legitimacy of garages. The Government is also working to remove abandoned vehicles and expand parking capacity as part of efforts to improve traffic management in the Greater Malé Region.
