Minister of Education, Higher Education and Skills Development Dr Ismail Shafeeu has announced that the contract for the construction of a permanent building for Malé Vocational High School will be awarded in August.

The minister made the announcement while addressing the fourth session of the 2025 High Achievers' Awards ceremony held at the Centre for Higher Secondary Education (CHSE) in Hulhumalé.

Minister Dr Shafeeu said that when the current Administration assumed office in 2023, only around 34 per cent of Grade 10 students progressed to higher secondary education. He noted that the figure has since increased to 48 per cent following reforms introduced over the past two years to expand access to higher secondary education and raise awareness of its importance among students.

He described the increase as a major milestone, saying it reflects the success of the Government's education reforms while also demonstrating the aspirations and determination of the Maldivian people.

The minister said Malé Vocational High School is already operational, with students currently attending classes, and that preparations are underway to finalise the contract for the school's new building within August.

He added that the ministry is also working with industry partners through its Skills Development division to expand work-based apprenticeship programmes, providing students with greater opportunities to develop practical skills.

Minister Dr Shafeeu said every additional student who continues their education at school strengthens the nation's human capital, empowers young people and contributes to developing a productive future generation.
