The Maldives Meteorological Service (MET Office) has issued a White Alert for areas from Baa Atoll to Addu City, with strong winds and rough seas anticipated effective from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm on December 20, 2024.
Winds of 19–24 mph are forecast, accompanied by rough seas with wave heights of 5–8 feet. The MET Office has warned of possible swell wave surges during high tides and has urged caution for marine operators and the public.
For Hulhulé, the forecast from 10:00 am on December 20, to 10:00 am on December 21, predicts scattered showers, including heavy downpours and thunderstorms. Winds will range from 17–27 mph in a southwest to westerly direction, gusting up to 45 mph during showers. Seas are expected to be rough, becoming very rough during severe weather.
In Hanimaadhoo, the forecast from 1:00 pm on December 20, to 1:00 pm on December 21, expects scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms. Winds will blow northwest to northerly at 7–17 mph, with gusts up to 45 mph during showers. Seas are forecast to become rough, with wave heights of 3–6 feet.
The Southern Maldives, including Kadhdhoo, Kaadehdhoo, and Gan, are forecast to experience harsher conditions from till 1:00 pm on December 20. Winds of 17–27 mph in a southwest to westerly direction, gusting up to 50 mph, are expected. Seas will be very rough, with wave heights of 7–9 feet.
The MET Office has advised all residents and visitors to exercise caution due to the adverse weather, particularly those engaging in marine activities.
