The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) is on track to complete the redevelopment of N. Lhohi harbour by early 2025.

The project, launched in August 2023, aims to address the longstanding issues faced by the harbour and provide the community with a modern, fully functional facility.

Lhohi Island Council President, Ibrahim Mohamed, highlighted that severe damage to the existing structure of the harbour has hindered its economic benefits, including its ability to support the local fishing industry. He pointed out that the ice plant within the harbour area, designed to supply ice to fishermen, is not being utilised effectively.

The Council President also highlighted the significant challenges posed by the harbour's insufficient space to accommodate the growing number of vessels, as well as its inability to meet modern demands. He further noted that the harbour becomes especially hazardous during the rainy season, making it difficult to provide critical services, such as sea ambulance transfers during medical emergencies.

The first phase of the project has already seen the completion of a 150-metre quay wall, and paving work is nearing finalisation. Part of the harbour is expected to be operational within the next week, with the second phase commencing shortly after.

The redevelopment, funded through the State budget at a cost of MVR 68 million, will include a 121-acre ramp, a concrete jetty, two navigation lights, 19 streetlights, and 1,720 square metres of pavement.

The existing harbour in Lhohi, built after the tsunami, is one of the oldest in the Maldives.
