President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has reviewed progress on the land reclamation project underway in Kaafu Girifushi.
The President inspected the project site following a ceremony held in Girifushi yesterday to administer the oath and present rifles to trainees of the Maldives National Defence Force’s 72nd and 73rd Basic Training Courses.
The project is among the largest initiatives launched to strengthen the MNDF’s capabilities by expanding training infrastructure and improving the skills of service personnel.
Under the first phase, 13.3 hectares of land will be reclaimed, expanding Girifushi beyond its existing 5.7 hectares. The project also includes coastal protection works, with rock revetments to protect the newly reclaimed area and offshore breakwaters and groynes to prevent erosion.
An L-block quay wall will be constructed to allow vessels to berth, while two jetties measuring 40 metres and 12 metres will be developed to improve access and facilitate the transport of equipment.
Plans also include replacing the existing 100-metre firing range with a 300-metre small arms range.
Once the reclamation, coastal protection, and harbour upgrading works are completed, the Government plans to establish a modern training centre in Girifushi with comprehensive facilities.
Girifushi is also planned to serve as the main training centre for the Maldives National Service, a programme introduced by President Dr Muizzu to develop disciplined and responsible young people.
