The Civil Court has ordered the freezing of Transparency Maldives' bank accounts after the organisation failed to pay compensation awarded to a former employee following an unlawful dismissal case.

The order follows an application filed by former employee Ali Shareef, who sought to enforce a court ruling after Transparency Maldives failed to pay MVR 356,932 in salary and allowances awarded to him. His lawyer filed the application with the Civil Court on 5 May, requesting that the organisation's accounts be frozen and the outstanding amount recovered through the court.

The dispute began after Ali filed a complaint with the Employment Tribunal, alleging that Transparency Maldives had breached his employment agreement by requiring him to leave his post before the agreed date after he accepted employment with another organisation. He also alleged that he had been subjected to harassment and discrimination, which ultimately forced him to leave his job.

The Employment Tribunal ruled that Ali had been dismissed in breach of the required procedures and ordered Transparency Maldives to reinstate him. The tribunal also awarded him MVR 356,932 in salary and allowances covering the period from his dismissal until the conclusion of the case.

Transparency Maldives appealed the tribunal's decision to the High Court, which upheld the ruling. The Civil Court subsequently ordered the organisation to pay the compensation within three days. After the payment was not made within the deadline, the court ordered the organisation's bank accounts to be frozen and directed that the money be transferred to Ali through the court.
