The Visit Maldives Club (VMC) will host a major international sports fishing competition, Burunu Boma Sports Fishing Tournament, between April and May 2025, focusing on sustainable "catch and release" practices.
The Burunu Boma Sports Fishing Tournament will be launched on December 20 at 8:00 p.m., targeting both international fishing enthusiasts and local tourism industry participants.
"The competition is another step towards promoting sustainable fisheries and tourism initiatives," said MMPRC's CEO Ibrahim Shiuree. He highlighted the Maldives' recent recognition as the World's 'Leading Green Destination' and emphasised the tournament's role in showcasing the country's traditional sustainable fishing practices.
VMC President Ahmed Saaif said the tournament would help promote sports tourism opportunities in the Maldives. Participants will compete for prizes across various categories, with special recognition for sustainable fishing practices.
The event has secured endorsements from the Ministry of Tourism, Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources, Visit Maldives, MATI, Maldives Association of Travel Agents and Tour Operators, National Hotel and Guesthouse Association of Maldives, National Boating Association of Maldives, Maldives Fisheries and Ocean Resources Marketing and Promotion Corporation, and Maldivian Red Crescent.
