The Maldives Blood Service (MBS) has launched nucleic acid testing (NAT) under the Malé City Group of Hospitals to strengthen the safety of blood transfusions in the Maldives.

In a post on X, MCGH CEO Ibrahim Abdul Razzaq Haleem described the introduction of NAT as a major milestone in modernising the country's blood services. He said the technology can detect infections such as Hepatitis B, HIV and Hepatitis C in donated blood much earlier than conventional screening methods, while also providing greater accuracy in test results.

CEO Haleem said NAT represents the latest technology used to ensure blood safety. He added that the introduction of the service marks an important national milestone in modernising blood services in line with international standards, while supporting President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's policies and pledges to strengthen the healthcare sector and improve the quality of public health services.

He also noted that the initiative supports the national standards for blood services and contributes to achieving the strategic goals outlined in the Maldives Thalassaemia Master Plan 2024–2034.
