Swell surges in several areas of Malé, have prompted the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) to respond to flooding in affected areas.

The swell surge coincided with the highest tide in the Malé region at 11:53, when the sea level reached 0.74 metres.

The Maldives National Defence Force said its Fire and Rescue Service was working to drain floodwater from affected roads.

Industrial Village was among the worst-hit areas, where strong waves swept several parked motorcycles into the sea, causing damage.

Flooding was also reported in the Raalhugandu area, which has previously been affected by swell surges. Tidal waves also affected parts of Boduthakurufaanu Magu, while rocks and sand were washed ashore in several areas.

Although weather conditions have not been severe in recent days, the Maldives Meteorological Service (Met Office) forecast wave heights of between two and four feet. They warned that swell surges could occur again on Monday.
