Bangladesh has pledged to contribute 20,000 additional saplings to the Maldives’ Five Million Tree Programme as part of ongoing cooperation between the two countries on climate action and environmental protection.

The announcement was made by Bangladesh Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman during a tree-planting ceremony held at Lonuziyaaraiy Park today as part of his official visit to the Maldives to attend celebrations marking the country’s 61st Independence Day.

During the ceremony, Dr Khalilur presented 10 saplings to the Government of Maldives as a gesture of friendship and goodwill, while announcing Bangladesh’s additional contribution to the national tree-planting initiative.

Speaking at the event, Minister of Foreign Affairs Iruthisham Adam and Minister of Climate Change, Environment and Energy Ali Shareef highlighted the importance of the Five Million Tree Programme, which was inaugurated by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu on 5 June 2025 at Lonuziyaaraiy Park.

They said the initiative aims to strengthen climate resilience, protect biodiversity and promote environmental sustainability across the Maldives.

The ministers expressed appreciation to the Government of Bangladesh for the contribution, noting that the partnership reflects the close relations between the two countries and their shared commitment to addressing climate change through practical cooperation.

The ceremony further strengthened Maldives-Bangladesh cooperation in environmental conservation and sustainable development.
