The Parliament approved the appointment of Abdul Haseeb Ismail as a member of the Election Commission on Tuesday.

The decision was made unanimously, with 67 lawmakers voting in favour of the appointment. President Dr Mohamed Muizzu had submitted Haseeb's name to Parliament on 14 October to fill the vacancy created by the impending expiry of the current President of the Election Commission, Fuad Thaufeeq's, term on 23 November.

Following a review of Haseeb's nomination, the Committee on Independent Institutions recommended his appointment to Parliament, which was subsequently supported by all members during the vote.

Haseeb is currently serving as an assistant director at the Election Commission, having joined the organisation on 2 January 2022. He has also held key positions in the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Islamic Affairs.
