The Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has called on the public to refrain from spreading unverified claims regarding the allocation of land plots in Hulhumalé.

The appeal comes amid ongoing investigations by the Maldives Police Service (MPS) and other authorities into alleged mismanagement linked to the 'Gedhoruveriya' and 'Binveriya' housing schemes.

In a statement, HDC clarified that its land allocation process adheres to a transparent and competitive bidding framework. The organisation expressed concern that misinformation could erode public confidence, stating that allegations of guideline breaches in land sales were unfounded.

The corporation outlined the allocation process, which begins with potential bidders submitting Expressions of Interest (EOIs). Only those who complete this step can participate in bidding, and plots are awarded to the highest bidder. HDC also noted that bidding amounts must meet or exceed a base rate approved by its Board of Directors, ensuring fairness and transparency in the transactions.

HDC reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining integrity in its operations and urged the public to rely on verified information, and emphasised the importance of fostering trust in the system while addressing concerns raised about the allocation procedures.

This statement follows the suspension of all HDC Board members, excluding the chairperson, by the Privatization and Corporatization Board (PCB) on December 19. The suspension is part of an ongoing investigation into allegations of mismanagement tied to the 'Binveriya' housing scheme. Additionally, Ibrahim Fazul Rasheed, Managing Director of HDC, resigned on December 21 to facilitate an independent investigation into these allegations.

The corporation assured full cooperation with the investigation and reiterated its dedication to transparent practices as it navigates these challenges.
