Ahmed Mubeen, Managing Director of Regional Airports Company Limited (RACL), has stated that the process of transferring the operations of RACL under Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) is now in progress.
Speaking on MMTV's Bodu Khabaru programme, Mubeen explained that the integration follows a cabinet decision to merge Velana International Airport, RACL, and MACL. He noted that both RACL and MACL have signed the necessary agreements, which are now awaiting review and approval by the Ministry of Finance. Once approved, an implementation model will be finalised and put into action.
Discussing the rationale behind this decision, Mubeen highlighted that RACL was operating at a loss before the intervention of current Government. To address this, a comprehensive master plan has been developed for each of the eight regional airports, along with two additional airports under the company’s care, focusing on achieving profitability and long-term sustainability.
He emphasised the importance of enabling each airport to become self-sufficient by maximising the use of available land and resources for activities such as tourism, agriculture, and fuel sales. He also noted ongoing efforts to attract investors, with significant development projects set to gain momentum in the coming year.
Currently, RACL oversees the operations of several key airports, including Hanimaadhoo Airport, Kulhudhuffushi Airport, Funadhoo Airport, Hoarafushi Airport, Maavarulu Airport, and Fuvahmulah Airport.
While the latest financial records are not publicly available, the most recent data from 2021 reveals that RACL reported a loss of MVR 43.6 million. The company’s auditor also raised concerns about the business's ability to continue operating sustainably.
