Mohamed Mauroof Jameel has been appointed as the Managing Director and a member of the Board of Directors of the Housing Development Corporation (HDC).

The announcement comes in the wake of Ibrahim Fazul Rasheed's resignation, who stepped down on Saturday amid ongoing investigations into allegations of corruption involving the allocation of land and flats in Hulhumalé. Fazul’s passport has been seized as part of the inquiry, raising concerns about transparency in key housing initiatives, including the Binveriya project.

The Binveriya project has faced scrutiny over claims that land in Phase 2 of Hulhumalé was acquired using forged documents. However, HDC has strongly denied these allegations, maintaining that all residential land in Phase 2 was allocated through a transparent bidding process in strict compliance with regulations.

Mauroof’s appointment brings a seasoned professional with extensive expertise to the helm of HDC. Prior to the corporation’s establishment, he served as Director General of the Hulhumalé Development Unit, where he played a pivotal role in the Hulhulé land reclamation and Hulhumalé development projects. Over the years, he has held senior positions at both HDC and the Housing Development Finance Corporation (HDFC), establishing himself as a prominent figure in Maldivian urban planning and infrastructure development.

In addition to his leadership roles, Mauroof has significantly contributed to national infrastructure development. During former president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom’s administration, he served as Minister of Construction and Public Infrastructure, overseeing critical projects that shaped the nation’s urban landscape. His architectural expertise is further emphasised by his work on resort design and his commitment to preserving the Maldives’ architectural heritage.

Mauroof is also the author of Coral Stone Mosques of Maldives, highlighting his dedication to documenting and safeguarding the country’s cultural and architectural history.

Mauroof's appointment has been widely welcomed, with many praising him as a capable and well-suited leader for the role.
