National Disaster Management Authority(NDMA) has released and update regarding the impacts caused to Malé and several areas of the the Maldives caused by the heavy rain during December 2024.

The recent heavy rains have caused significant flooding and disruption in several parts of the Maldives, prompting coordinated relief efforts from authorities and aid organisations.

On December 17, three northern islands—Henbadhoo, Kendhikulhudhoo, and Kurendhoo—were severely affected by heavy rain. Among them, Noonu Atoll Henbadhoo bore the brunt of the flooding, with approximately 80 homes inundated. While no residents required relocation, the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) immediately began efforts to drain the floodwaters.

The Maldivian Red Crescent provided rapid assessments and mental health first aid to residents. A detailed damage evaluation was conducted, revealing impacts on both possessions and the structural integrity of homes. So far, 27 damage forms have been submitted to the authorities for processing. Reports from Kendhikulhudhoo and Kurendhoo are still pending.

Just days later, on December 21, heavy rains led to flooding in the capital city, Malé. The MNDF, Malé City Council, and the Public Works Department mobilised quickly to address the situation. The Maldivian Red Crescent received 98 calls for assistance, including 70 requests for sandbags, 21 reports of damage, and seven calls for other forms of support. A total of 304 sandbags were distributed to 49 locations, including homes and storage facilities, in an effort to control flooding.

Twelve households in Malé received immediate assistance, with the Red Crescent conducting rapid assessments of the affected properties. Eight households, comprising 32 individuals, were temporarily relocated where food and basic necessities were provided. After floodwaters receded, these families returned to their homes.

Further assessments in Malé, carried out by NDMA and the Red Crescent, identified 30 households that suffered damage. While much of the damage was to personal belongings, some houses also sustained structural harm, including damage to ceilings.

Forms documenting the damage have been submitted and are currently being processed and verified.
