Four undocumented migrant workers were detained during a coordinated raid conducted on December 22 at Hulhumalé Phase 2. Authorities targeted businesses operating within the Hiyaa flats as part of the operation.

This raid forms part of a larger government initiative to identify and detain undocumented migrants. As part of these efforts, over 5,000 migrant workers have already been repatriated. The crackdown comes amid increasing concerns about illegal immigration and its broader implications for the country.

Over the past week the operation, which occurred on December 21, involved searches at 13 business establishments within the Hiyaa flats, including shops, cafés, restaurants, bakeries, and salons. Maldives Immigration confirmed that three foreign nationals were detained during the raid. The individuals were found working without proper documentation in two of the businesses inspected.

Throughout the year, authorities have significantly intensified their efforts to address the issue. Initiatives like Operation Kurangi play a central role, focusing on collecting biometric data from all foreign nationals in the Maldives. Additionally, the Immigration Watch platform, launched in July 2024, empowers the public to anonymously report suspected illegal immigration activities, further bolstering the Government’s strategy.

Officials continue to prioritise enforcement actions, using coordinated operations like this one to ensure compliance and safeguard national interests.
