Funadhoo MP Mohamed Mamdooh speaking at the PNC gathering
Member of Parliament (MP) Mohamed Mamdooh from Funadhoo constituency stated that the previous Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) government mismanaged public funds and broke public trust, adding they would not be given another opportunity to govern.
At a gathering of the Progressive National Congress (PNC) on the night of December 23, he drew comparisons between the previous government's failures and the current Administration's achievements in its first year.
During his speech, Mamdooh said that the previous administration had accumulated MVR 64 billion in debt whilst failing to deliver basic services.
This financial mismanagement, he noted, was exemplified by former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's government taking 40-year loans despite warnings from international financial institutions in 2022, significantly impacting the Maldivian economy.
According to the Funadhoo MP, proper management of COVID-relief grants and loans during MDP's five-year term could have funded sewerage systems for all inhabited islands; instead, he said these resources had been poorly utilised.
He further stated that legal authority was frequently undermined during the 19th Parliament, despite MDP holding a majority, and that citizens were forced to seek political favours for basic services.
"The Congress Party's force stands against such practices," Mamdooh emphasised, explaining that the PNC remained focused on public service rather than officials' interests.
Mamdooh concluded by praising President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's first year in office. Whilst acknowledging significant progress in addressing inherited issues, he noted that considerable work still lay ahead.
