The suspension of the Board of Directors of the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) was lifted on December 24, 2024, following the appointment of a new Managing Director, Mauroof (Mai) Jameel. This decision comes amid ongoing investigations into alleged irregularities in the allocation of land plots in Hulhumalé.

Allegations against the former Managing Director, Ibrahim Fazul Rasheed, include claims that plots under the Binveriya Scheme were allocated to individuals not listed as official recipients. Among these individuals is Fazul's brother, Ibrahim Fazeel Rasheed, who is said to have wrongfully received a plot.

Fazul, appointed as HDC's Managing Director in November 2023, resigned from his position on December 21, 2024, following his implication in the corruption allegations. The board's suspension, imposed by the Privatization and Corporatization Board (PCB) to ensure full cooperation with the Maldives Police Service, aimed to promote transparency and accountability.

The suspension applied to all board members except Chairman Ahmed Nasif. The members affected included Azhan Abdulla Saeed, Ibrahim Yoosuf Fulhu, Mohamed Visham, Ula Mohamed Rasheed, Arif AbduSamad, Mohamed Najil, Mohamed Waheed, Fathimath Mizna Ali, and Yoosuf Waheed.

While the suspension has been lifted, their passports remain seized as part of the ongoing investigation. In total, passports of 20 individuals, including Fazul and his brother, are being held by authorities at the request of the police.

In connection with the investigation, 15 senior staff members of HDC, who served under Fazul's leadership, have also been dismissed. These actions reflect efforts to address potential misconduct and reinforce accountability within the state-owned enterprise.

While the board's suspension has ended, the investigation into alleged irregularities in land allocation continues. Authorities, including the Maldives Police Service, are working to determine the extent of the misconduct and ensure accountability in the allocation of state land.

Further updates are anticipated as the inquiry progresses.
