The Ministry of Tourism has addressed recent controversial remarks made by State Minister of Tourism Mohamed Nihad, clarifying that his statements do not represent the official position of the Government of the Maldives.

In a statement released on December 24, the Ministry announced that Nihad has been suspended from his duties pending further review. It reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the Maldives remains a safe, secure, and welcoming destination for visitors worldwide.

The Ministry highlighted the country’s recent achievements in the tourism sector, noting that under the leadership of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, the Maldives is on course to welcome two million visitors this year—a record milestone. Officials described this as a testament to the nation’s growing reputation as a top global destination.

The Ministry also pointed to key milestones recorded in February 2024, including the highest-ever daily arrivals of 10,213 on February 10 and a record monthly total of 217,392 visitors. These figures underscore the tourism sector’s critical role in supporting local livelihoods, creating employment opportunities, and driving economic growth.

Acknowledging the challenges of balancing tourism growth with political stability, the Ministry emphasised its commitment to preserving the Maldives' reputation as a peaceful and tranquil sanctuary. It stressed that the country’s appeal goes beyond its natural beauty, with a focus on providing warm, inclusive hospitality that ensures all visitors feel valued and secure.

Looking ahead, the Ministry expressed confidence in the Maldives’ ability to sustain its position as a premier destination. It reiterated its dedication to working with stakeholders to enhance visitor experiences while supporting sustainable development within the tourism sector.
